Tell your MP: Short‑term protection puts survivors at risk

Being granted protection should be the start of safety, not the beginning of a new cycle of fear.

But the newly announced immigration changes have halved the period of leave given to refugees to just 30 months. Every two and a half years, survivors of torture and war will be forced to reapply for protection, while they live under the threat and fear of being sent back to their torturers.

Stability is essential for recovery and without it, people struggle to heal, to rebuild their lives. Forcing survivors to repeatedly prove they still deserve protection undermines recovery and resurfaces trauma.

We must act NOW to stop these harmful changes. A motion to challenge these changes has been submitted by Stella Creasy MP, but we need more MPs’ support if we are going to secure a parliamentary debate by 29 April.
